History of Ram Navami

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shri Vishnu takes incarnation on earth from time to time so that devotees can be protected and demons can be destroyed. That is why Bhagaban Sri Bhishnu was born in the form of Shri Ram from the womb of Rani Koushalya of Ayodhya in Treta Yug to wipe out demons like Ravana from the earth. According to Hindu religious books, the Ramayan and the Mahabharata, none of the three wives of King Dasharath i.e, Kausalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra had any children. For this reason, King Dasharath organized a grand Yagya as per the advice of his Rishi Barishta Putrakamishta under the authority of the sage “Rishyasringa” which concluded with a celestial figure that emerged Agnidev from the fire with a pot of rice and milk as Prasad and provided to King Dasharath. After feeding Agnidev’s Prasad by three wives of King Dasharath, Kaikeyi gave birth to Sri Bharat, Sumitra gave birth twin sons Lakhshman and Shatrughna. While from the womb of Queen Koushalya, Lord Sri Ramkrishna incarnated on the earth on the night of Shukla Paksha Navami of the month of Chaitra, and that is why this night is celebrated as a festival in the name of Ram Navami.

It is also believed that Lord Ram was born to destroy the sins from the earth and establish religion. According to the Ramayan, Shri Ram was born in Punarvasu Nakshatra and Karak Lagna, which is celebrated as a divine time because Lord Sri Bhishnu had incarnated as Sri Ram in the mortal world itself.
